On June 1, 2015, Baek Yeongsim, who graduated from CHU's Department of Nursing in 1984, received the Volunteerism Award at the 25th annual Hoam Awards. He was born in Hamdeok, Jeju, and after graduating from CHU, he went to Africa as a volunteer in 1990, where he is currently working in Kenya and Malawi as a medical volunteer. Mr. Baek helped established a kindergarten and elementary school in Malawi in 2008, and in 2010 he helped set up a hospital and nursing school. The people of Malawi call Mr. Baek "Malawi's Nightingale" and "Malawi's Angel", since he has spent over 20 years there living among the people as a family member, doing volunteer work. Mr. Baek is now involved in establishing a medical college there, and encourages current students to also devote themselves to the less fortunate and do volunteer work. In 1990, the CEO of Samsung established the Hoam Award, to award those who made significant contributions to culture, academics and volunteerism.
